In 2000, France was the first country to enshrine political parity in law. Since then, there must be an equal number of female and male candidates on all lists – this also applies to the upcoming regional and département elections on 20 and 27 June. Thanks to the law, the proportion of women in French politics has increased significantly, but a closer look reveals that they often remain in second place, for example as assistants or deputies.
Mayor Juliette Hurlot wants to change this – and is therefore involved in the association “Elles aussi,” which wants to bring more women into higher political offices. Johanna Siegel and Grégory Hopf report on how this can be done and where there are still gaps in the French parity law.
The report was broadcast by Arte in the 18/06/2021 news bulletin.
